One Stop, One Shop - All Done !

The following information has been provided by Ecobubs - our Nappy provider:

Which nappies are the best for our baby & our lifestyle?

Every baby is unique and it is important that you find the system that is right for you. Most nappies can be mixed and matched, so it is not essential to stick to the same nappy type.

How many nappies does my baby need?

Here’s a little table to help you find the right amount of nappies for your baby. We recommend buying more rather than less. This will keep the over cost of cloth nappying down. Buying fewer nappies will not save you money in the long term.

I’m getting leaks! What am I doing wrong?

  • Check your nappy is pre-washed before first use, as this makes them fluffed up and ready for action.
  • Check you have the right size nappy. The nappy should fit snuggly around the waist and legs, but not too tight.
  • Make sure no clothing is tucked into any part of the nappy - this will cause leaks.
  • If you have a moderate-heavy wetter, you may need to boost the nappy. We sell boosters in the Inserts & Boosters part of the shop.
  • For night time, we recommend 2 inserts - in our wool pocket nappies.
  • Remember, leaks from ANY nappy system will happen from time to time (even disposable nappies).
  • You may have a build-up in the fleece (see nappy maintenance below).

Isn’t washing nappies just as environmentally damaging as using disposables?

This is one of the great myths of the disposables vs cloth debate. Remember disposables require resources to be manufactured and transported, etc, and the use of energy (output of CO2) and natural resources is far greater than washing with environmentally friendly nappy wash. Even if you use just one washable nappy per day, you will stop 730 nappies being disposed of in the landfill. So yes, you can make a difference!

How often will I need to change my baby?

Babies need to be changed regularly, whether in cloth nappies or not. You will get into the groove of knowing how often your little one will need to be changed. Newborns wet far more often than an older toddler.

Can I use cloth and disposables in a mixed system?

Yes, many parents do this. If you plan to use a mixture of disposables and cloth, you will need about 8-10 cloth nappies.

Will my baby get nappy rash if I use reusables?

This is an urban myth. There is NO research to say that cloth will give your child nappy rash. Nappy rash is often caused by things like: teething, food intolerances / upsets, infrequent changing, fungal infections.

Do my nappies need to be maintained?

Yes. Over time, your nappies can produce a build-up of washing product in the fleece. This can cause nappy rash and leaks, if not dealt with.

If you suspect that your nappies do have a build-up: soak in a bucket of water with half a cup of baking soda, for 2-3 hours. Then scrub each nappy’s fleece with a designated (kept for the nappies) nappy brush with a little bit of dishwashing liquid (a nail brush or dish wash brush works well!). This will break up any washing product or nappy creams that have lodged into the stay-dry fleece.

Washing your Ecobubs nappies

  1. When you take the nappy off your baby, dispose of any solids down the toilet. Rinse if necessary.
  2. Remove the absorbent insert from the nappy & place both nappy parts in to a lidded bucket.
  3. Your nappies do NOT need to be soaked in water or chemicals.
  4. On washing day, pop your nappies into the washing machine and put them through a cold rinse cycle.
  5. Once rinsed, add your preferred washing product and put on a warm/hot full cycle (not above 60 degrees Celsius). You only need to use 1/3rd of the recommended amount for your nappies to be nice and clean. Using excess laundry product can cause your nappies to suffer from build-up on the fleece. See above for maintenance instructions.
  6. Ecobubs recommends using Canesten Hygiene laundry once a week to keep your nappies well maintained.
  7. Dry nappies straight away - by either tumble drying or line drying. Your nappies will wear faster with tumble drying.

The sun works as a natural bleach, so, if your lighter coloured nappies/inserts have any stains, try the sun before using harsh chemicals.

NOTE:

  • Ecobubs does not recommend the use of Ecostore powder for their Wool Pocket Nappies. This washing powder is not meant for woolen items and may cause damage to the wool outer.
  • Do NOT use the following on Ecobubs products: bleach, enzyme-based detergents, fabric softener or dry cleaning chemicals.
  • ecofreNZ recommends using Miracle Wash Laundry Ball - chemical, bleach and enzyme free!

The wool works as a second barrier against leaks and has proved itself to be very successful. It consists of one layer wool (which does not need to be lanolised), one layer of waterproof 1mil PUL fabric and one layer of micro fleece.

Inserts & Boosters

Ecobubs Inserts are made of a thirsty micro fibre. They are highly absorbent and very quick drying.

The small Insert is made up of two layers of microfibre that is folded into three to give six layers.

The medium/large Insert is snapped in half to give four layers of absorbency.

Boosters are a necessity for babies that wet heavily during the night and to boost your nappy during the day giving extra protection for a longer period.

Boosters are made from two layers of microfibre and slide inside your folded insert.
